Vowinkel's Story

ottovowinkel

Irving Sloane

The Master Luthier of Amsterdam Based in Amsterdam, Netherlands, Otto Vowinkel began his journey into lutherie in 1984. His very first guide was the seminal book "Classical Guitar Construction" by Irving Sloane, which served as his primary "teacher" during those formative years.

The Early Years: Perseverance and Refinement

Vowinkel’s beginnings were marked by sheer perseverance and countless sleepless nights. In the early stages, he relied heavily on the critiques of those around him, using their feedback to meticulously refine his craft. This iterative process allowed his instruments to evolve, bit by bit, toward perfection.

A Shared Vision of the "Ideal Guitar"

The turning point that brought his guitars to international acclaim followed two significant encounters: meeting his wife, the Dutch guitarist Esther Steenbergen, and collaborating with Alex van der Horst (the renowned Andalusian-style luthier better known as “Alejandro”).

Together, they shared a profound philosophy regarding the "ideal guitar." This vision focused on:
- Flexible Tonal Palette: A wide range of colors for the performer.
- Rapid Response: An instrument that reacts instantly to the player's touch.
- Superior Sound Quality: Exceptional clarity and projection.

Global Recognition and Discipline

Driven by a naturally meticulous nature and high levels of discipline, Vowinkel gradually built a stellar reputation that reached guitarists across the globe. Today, his instruments are the choice of many world-class musicians, including: Sanel Redzic, Denis Azabagic, Tariq Harb George Sakellariou, Leonardo Amuedo, Ernesto Snajer Nelson Faria, Julio Cobelli, and many others.

The Vowinkel Sound & Feel

An Otto Vowinkel guitar is instantly recognizable for its specific characteristics: - Lightweight & Sensitive: The build is light, making the instrument highly responsive.
- Distinct Vibrato: It produces a remarkably clear and expressive vibrato.
- Exceptional Upper Register: The notes remain beautiful and resonant even in the highest frets.
- Rich Bass: Deep, three-dimensional bass notes provide a solid foundation.
- Perfect Balance: An even response across all strings and registers.
- Playability: Most importantly, his guitars are known for being incredibly "easy to play," offering a sense of comfort and ease that allows the musician to focus entirely on the music.
